Is South Park cancelled in 2020? Rumours are circulating online so let’s address the popular animated show’s renewal status.

“I’m going down to South Park, gonna have myself a time…”

Who can’t help but sing and hum along whenever Les begins to sing that iconic tune?

For fans who have been with Eric, Stan, Kyle and Kenny from the start, this has been an impulse felt since way back in 1997 when South Park first aired.

Since then, it has gone on to become one of the most popular and discussed animated sitcoms of all time.

Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, audiences have long found the creators’ “nothing is off the table” approach to comedy incredibly refreshing. Even today, there’s simply nothing these TV titans can’t satirise.

Over the years, despite being swamped by controversy, viewers have praised the show’s consistent ability to tackle real world issues and concerns in the most outlandish fashion.

Surely that can’t be coming to an end?

Panic spreads on Twitter

A number of fans have flocked to Twitter to express their upset regarding rumours that South Park has been cancelled.

Is South Park cancelled in 2020?

  • No, South Park has not been cancelled in 2020. The pandemic special airs in September and Comedy Central renewed the series through 2022.

As highlighted by The Hollywood Reporter in September 2019, Comedy Central renewed South Park through 2022, so there’s plenty more on the horizon after the pandemic special which airs on Wednesday, September 30th 2020.

The source also includes some perspective from Trey Parker: “People have been talking about cancelling us for 22 f***ing years… In this day and age, it is more of an achievement than it was before, the fact that we are still going.”

Of course, he’s referring to the prominence of cancel culture in recent years.

So, the question really boils down to this: where do the rumours regarding cancellation stem from?

SBS cancels South Park

Although the series itself hasn’t been cancelled, TV Blackbox reports that SBS has finally let it go.

A spokesperson for SBS expressed to the previous source:

“After 23 years, SBS made the decision to let South Park go, mmkay. The edgy, irreverent and often controversial series broke new ground when SBS premiered the cult phenomenon in the late nineties, opening Australian audiences up to a type of humour we’d never experienced before…”

Essentially, SBS cancelling it has led some to believe that the show was cancelled in general. Fortunately, this isn’t the case.

TV Blackbox also highlights that the popular show will now be at home on 10’s new multichannel 10Shake, due for launch on Sunday, September 27th 2020.
