Ratched arrived on Netflix on September 18th and fans have been left with plenty of question including whether fearsome Nurse Mildred Ratched is gay.

Nurse Mildred Ratched is one of the most feared and reviled characters in all of cinema history.

The villainous nurse starred as the main antagonist in 1975’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which was adapted from Ken Kesey’s novel of the same name and actress Louise Fletcher won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal.

As a result, there was a huge amount of excitement and trepidation when it was announced that Netflix would be creating a prequel series that focused on Mildred Ratched before the events of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

That series is Ratched and it arrived on Netflix on September 18th, 2020 and it’s left fans with plenty of questions including whether or not Nurse Mildred Ratched is gay.

Ratched on Netflix

Ratched arrived on Netflix on September 18th, 2020.

The eight-episode series tells the story of nurse Mildred Ratched before the events of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

In 1947, Mildred Ratched is welcomed as a psychiatric nurse at Lucia State Hospital but beyond her well-kept and stylish exterior, a darkness begins to fester within.

Is Nurse Mildred Ratched gay?

  • Yes. In Ratched, Nurse Mildred Ratched is indeed shown to be gay or at the very least, bisexual.

Nurse Mildred Ratched’s sexuality is never really explored in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, in fact, next to nothing about her history and personality is revealed as she’s too busy being a power-hungry battleaxe in Miloš Forman’s Oscar-winning classic.

However, in the Ratched series, we watch as Mildred slowly develops feeling for Gwendolyn Briggs (Cynthia Nixon), the campaign manager for Governor George Wilburn, after they cross paths in episode 1.

A hint at bad things to come

As Ratched grows closer to Gwendolyn as the series progresses, she finally opens up and admits her feelings to Gwendolyn during a fiery and tense conversation in episode 7.

However, Mildred’s plans of running away with Gwendolyn are dashed when the latter reveals that she has terminal cancer.

After a series of setbacks already, this latest piece of information, being presented when Ratched is at her most vulnerable is surely going to a stepping towards the Nurse Ratched we see in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Of course, Gwendolyn is still alive by the time season 1 comes to an end but the impact of her eventual death could prove to be catastrophic for Mildred in season 2 and beyond.

Until then, season 1 of Ratched is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on September 18th, 2020.
