Patrick Dempsey is an American actor known for playing neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd, AKA McDreamy on the hit television show, Grey’s Anatomy.

However, Dempsey doesn’t just play a hero on TV, it appears that he is one in real life thanks to his role in the Dempsey Challenge.

The Dempsey Challenge was set up by Patrick as a way of raising funds for the Dempsey Center at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

The Dempsey Centre, also started by Patrick “makes life better for people managing the impact of cancer. Services are provided at no cost.”

What is the Dempsey Challenge?

According to the Dempsey Centre website, the Dempsey Challenge is an “an annual run, walk, and cycle experience and is the primary fundraiser for the Dempsey Centre.”

The Challenge is presented by Amgen Oncology.

The goal this year is to raise $1.5 million for the Dempsey Centre, by everyone taking part completing 1.5 million miles.

The Dempsey Challenge is still going ahead this year, in spite of COVID-19, but the challenge will be ran virtually. The Dempsey Centre states:

“We’ll have challenges, online events, and amazing incentives to keep you connected and inspired. One thing hasn’t changed: Dempsey Challenge will be the fun, community-focused event it has always been.”

How you can join the Dempsey Challenge

This year, the challenge is scheduled to take place September 26 and 27, the event will be held virtually using the fitness platforms Strava and Zwift.

Patrick encouraged people all over the world to join in with the challenge and help raise funds for the Dempsey Centre. He said: “No matter where you are in the world, you can join us.”

All of the funds go towards the Dempsey Centre, and “100% of dollars raised go to making life better for people managing the impact of cancer.”

Since the beginnings of the challenge, the money raised by the Dempsey Challenge have provided over $12 million in programs and services to people impacted by cancer- at no cost.
