Reported West Ham and Everton target Iago Herrerin was the only fully-fit member of Athletic Bilbao’s roster to be left out of their matchday squad for Friday’s pre-season friendly with Sevilla, according to Mundo Deportivo.

It has been clear for some time that a man who rose through the ranks at one of Spain’s most historic footballing institutions was about to bid farewell after 15 years on the rolling hills of the Basque country.

“He wants a new destination and that is why we hope something will soon be agreed for him to be able to leave Athletic,” head coach Gaizka Garitano told El Desmarque earlier in the summer.

The long-serving Herrerin has fallen behind Unai Simon in the Athletic pecking order and the veteran goalkeeper knows, deep down, that the chances of him ousting arguably the most in-form Spanish shot-stopper in the game today look slim.

With Deia claiming that the West Ham and Crystal Palace target is intrigued by the prospect of Premier League football, expect to see him boarding a flight to England at some point over the next three weeks.

Just to pour more fuel on the fire, MD claim that Herrerin is the only member of Athletic’s squad to be left out of the 28-strong party due to take on Sevilla today – apart from the injured Ibai Gomez, that is.

Everton are also reported to be interested, via Marca in August.

Youngster Joao Virginia made his Toffees debut in the 3-0 Carabao Cup win against Salford City in midweek, but neither he nor Jonas Lossl are capable of really putting pressure on the erratic Jordan Pickford.
