Articuno is returning to Pokémon for a series of raid battles, meaning that there’s a great chance to catch this Legendary Bird – provided you can find the right counter.

Originally debuting back in the very first generation of Pokémon games, Articuno is one of the three Legendary Birds of the Kanto region, and therefore, one of the most well-known (and sought-after) Legendary Pokémon.

Articuno will appear in Five Star Raids from September 18 to September 25, meaning you have a full week to team up with friends and try and catch this Pokémon.

How to catch Articuno in Pokémon Go

Articuno is an Ice and Flying Type Pokémon, which means it is particularly weak to Rock type attacks. It is also weak to Fire, Electric, and Steel Type moves, but to really hit it hard, you’ll want to use Rock.

Big, chunky Rock type Pokémon that are useful against Articuno. Pokémon Go recently had an Unova special event, so if you got hold of enough Roggenrola Candy, you could have a powerful Gigalith which will be perfect to take on an Ice/Flying Type.

Be careful, though, as some Rock-Types, such as Golem, are also part Ground Type, and are weak against Articuno’s Ice attacks. You’ll also want to make sure your Rock Type Pokémon doesn’t use a Ground Type move, as these are unable to hit Flying Type Pokémon at all.

Best counters for Articuno raids

According to Pokémon Go Hub, the best counters for Articuno raids are:

  • Rampardos
  • Rhyperior
  • Terrakion
  • Tyranitar
  • Omastar

These, though, are only as useful as their CP – if you’ve got a stronger Rock Type Pokémon, you’re better off using this. Unlike some raids, there’s no one single Pokémon that’s going to perform best against Articuno, so feel free to play your favourites.

With a little luck, the right counter, and a lot of help from your friends, you’ll be able to take down Articuno for a chance to capture the Legendary Bird.
