The first season of Dragon’s Dogma has just premiered on Netflix, but fans are already wondering if and when the series will return for season 2.

Between The Witcher and Castlevania, Netflix has had some huge success with adapting classic video games into hit series.

Now, the streaming platform is looking to make it three-from-three with Dragon’s Dogma, an adaptation of Capcom’s 2012 RPG title.

Season 1 of Dragon’s Dogma may have only just premiered, but fans are already wondering if Netflix will renew the animated series for a second season.

Will there be a season 2 of Dragon’s Dogma?

  • At the time of writing, Dragon’s Dogma has not been renewed for a second season by Netflix, but it’s far too early to shut the door on a potential return.

Unfortunately, we are split 50/50 as to whether or not the animated series will be renewed for a second season. On one hand, the season 1 finale did end on a slightly ambiguous note, with Ethan now a dragon on his own murderous rampage and Hannah travelling alone protecting humans from her Arisen.

On the other hand, there was no specific cliff-hanger that would suggest a second season was on the cards, i.e. if season 2 was being planned, we would have likely had a more dramatic final scene with Hannah vowing to save Ethan, rather than a nothing-scene with those kids.

Whilst there is definitely potential for multiple seasons of Dragon’s Dogma, in a similar style to Castlevania, the renewal will ultimately all depend on how many people watch the series. Hopefully, Netflix will reveal some more information surrounding the future of Dragon’s Dogma within the next few weeks, so keep checking back in.

Dragon’s Dogma season 2 release date…

  • If Dragon’s Dogma is renewed for a second season, we would expect it to premiere in late-2021 or early-2022.

With no official confirmation that the series will return, predicting a potential release window comes down to two factors; source material and animation time.

Within the broader Dragon’s Dogma universe from the video game franchise, there is enough source material to produce another season, even if is more of a side-story like from the latter seasons of Castlevania. However, writing a second season based on a small amount of canon material can prove both difficult and time-consuming.

Then we have the animation time. It’s unclear how much time and/or resources it takes from production to create the CG monsters like the Dragon Hydra or Lich.

Individually, the models for each of these CG creatures look great, but if they take longer to animate into the scenes then they could push back the season 2 premiere until 2022.
