Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports, during Everton’s League Cup match against Salford City, that he believes Lucas Digne is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.
Niels Nkounkou caught the eye for Everton against Salford, with the young left-back proving to be a major attacking threat on debut.
However, Carragher feels that Nkounkou has a big task on his hands to break into Everton’s team, as he rates Digne so highly.
“He’s done well, first game,” Carragher said, when judging the youngster’s performance.
“He will be back-up though because Everton have one of the best left-backs in the Premier League in Lucas Digne.”
Digne actually played at centre-back for Everton against Salford, although he is unlikely to perform that function in the league.
Digne has faced tough competition before at Everton, as he displaced Leighton Baines, so the emergence of Nkounkou is unlikely to faze him too much.
Nkounkou has really proven his worth to Everton now though, and there is a feeling that Marcel Brands may well have unearthed a gem.
The French teenager should get plenty more game time this season, and if he keeps putting in performances of the standard he showed on Wednesday night, then he will make it difficult for Carlo Ancelotti to leave him out.
