Defending Jacob was one of the best new shows of the summer, but will there be a season 2 of the hit crime drama?
Defending Jacob is an American crime drama miniseries produced by Apple TV and is an adaptation of the novel by William Landay of the same name.
The series follows a 14-year-boy called Jacob, who is accused of murdering one of his classmates. Along the way, we not only learn some grizzly details from the case, but we see a family torn apart by the doubt that one of them may be a killer.
With a solid storyline and featuring Hollywood A-listers Chris Evans, Michelle Dockery and Jaeden Martell, viewers have loved the rollercoaster murder mystery.
Now that Defending Jacob has come to an end, fans are eager to know if and when the show will return for a second season.
Will there be a season 2 of Defending Jacob?
- At the time of writing, Defending Jacob has not been renewed by Apple for season 2 and likely will never return for a second trial.
Unfortunately for fans, it seems unlikely that the show will be making a return because the 8 episodes from season 1 covered the entirety of Landay’s book.
However, Deadline reports that Defending Jacob is in Apple’s top three shows for audience growth and viewer engagement – meaning that the streaming platform may be interested in renewing the show.
Interestingly, the show was initially meant to be a movie. Speaking to Deadline, the shows creator and writer Mark Bomback said: “It was sent to me by [production company] Anonymous Content with the idea it would be a film.”
“I was thinking this was going to be an uphill battle making this a film…so I called them back and said I’m not interested in doing a film…but I would love to try and do a limited series version of it.” – Mark Bomback.
Could this mean that we see a spin-off feature down the line, rather than a continuation of Jacob’s story? It’s unlikely but possible.
Defending Jacob season 2: Release date
As Defending Jacob has yet to be renewed, there is no information as to when we could expect season 2 to premiere.
The series was ordered in late-September 2018 and began filming a few months later in April 2019. So, assuming that season 2 would have a similar one-year/18-month production cycle, we would expect part two to premiere in late-2021.
However, with such an all-star cast, there’s always the issue of scheduling, especially for such a Hollywood mega-star as Chris Evans. So production on a second season, if ordered, could depend on other external factors.
Potential story for the second season…
As previously mentioned, season 1 of Defending Jacob covered everything in the original novel – meaning there is no canon material left to work from.
There is a chance that the shows writers could come up with their own stories, continuing the story with Jacob waking up from the coma.
However, it is more likely that Defending Jacob will have spin-off shows that continue with the premise.
Digital Spy reports that Apple may consider transforming Defending Jacob into an anthology series where new characters are forced to defend ‘murder suspects’ who are family or close friends.
