The Social Dilemma arrived on Netflix on September 9th but just what songs appear in the documentary’s soundtrack and who composed the film’s score?

The music in a film or TV show is crucial.

The soundtrack can set to tone to what you’re watching and more often than not can make or break a project.

Netflix’s newest documentary features a soundtrack that’s almost horror-like in sound and features the perfect use of licensed music.

But just what songs appear in The Social Dilemma’s soundtrack and who composed the film’s score?

The Social Dilemma on Netflix

The Social Dilemma arrived on Netflix on September 9th, 2020.

The feature-length documentary explores the effects of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on our modern society.

Whether that’s through the collection of data, social media addiction or rising rates of mental health issues and political extremism.

The Social Dilemma’s soundtrack

The score to The Social Dilemma was composed and produced by Mark A. Crawford.

Crawford’s score to the documentary blends plenty of string instruments with occasional melodies on the piano to create a soundscape fitting of the technology-based horror that is being described in the film itself.

Mark A. Crawford is an Emmy-nominated composer, producer and director and has previously worked on numerous short films and documentaries including Body of Work, The Love Bugs and Classic among others.

The Social Dilemma’s songs

The Social Dilemma surprisingly only contains one licensed song but the song in question is the perfect choice given the influence that social media can have on people.

That singular song is:

  • I Put a Spell on You by Nina Simone

I Put a Spell on You appeared on the 1965 album of the same name and was originally written and performed by Jalacy Hawkins (aka Screamin’ Jay Hawkins).

Another cover version of I Put a Spell on You also appears in the trailer for The Social Dilemma, this time performed by music artist, Koda.

The Social Dilemma is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on September 9th, 2020.
