Maya helped free Jonathan from prison
The couple told their story on Good Morning America, and explained how Maya paused her successful basketball career at the age of 30 to work on the campaign to free Jonathan in February 2019.
Jonathan had been serving a 50 year prison sentence over the shooting of a homeowner during a robbery when he was 16. He is now 40 years old and was freed in July. A judge ruled in March that prosecutors had suppressed fingerprint evidence that could have helped prevent Irons being found guilty.
Jonathan told GMA that he proposed when he was freed, although he knew he wanted to marry her before then. He said:
“I wanted to marry her but at the same time protect her because being in a relationship with a man in prison, it’s extremely difficult and painful. And I didn’t want her to feel trapped and I wanted her to feel open and have the ability any time if this is too much for you, go and find somebody. Live your life. Because this is hard.”
