According to a report from Icelandic media outlet DV, Arsenal are close to completing the signing of Dijon’s Runar Alex Runarsson.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper has undergone a medical and is set to join Mikel Arteta and co in the near future. Runarsson is expected to replace Emiliano Martinez at the Emirates as the Argentine nears a move to Aston Villa.

Martinez had a fantastic end to last season, when he replaced Bernd Leno after his injury. The Argentine helped the Gunners win the FA Cup and the Community Shield – but that has failed to convince Arteta to make him the club’s number one.

The Daily Mail claims the Arsenal boss told Martinez that he had decided to keep Leno as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. The report also reveals Arteta wanted to use the German in the Europa League as well, which left the Argentine with little choice.

Martinez is expected to complete his £20 million move to Villa Park soon (Express and Star). Runarsson is likely to take his place at the Emirates and it seems as if Arsenal fans like him already.

Gunners supporters have carried out their research about the Iceland international and uncovered a tweet from more than nine years ago that has made Runarsson a fans’ favourite already.

“Wow how glad I am that Manchester United lost!,” tweeted the Iceland international in 2011.

Arsenal and Manchester United’s rivalry isn’t quite as fierce as it was back in the day but there’s still a fair bit of animosity between both sets of supporters.

Gunners fans, predictably, loved Runarsson’s tweet about United.
