Andre Villa-Boas believes the ‘extraordinary’ Florian Thauvin is like a new signing for Marseille, when speaking to Le10 Sport after the reported Aston Villa and Leicester City target produced another match-winning display.

Two years ago, this World Cup-winning winger was under serious consideration by a Bayern Munich side scouring the market for top-class talents capable of replacing their ageing legend Arjen Robben (Ouest France).

At the time, Thauvin felt like a natural successor to the Dutch number ten.

He was one of the most in-form forwards on planet earth after all, scoring goals for fun and raising his price-tag to somewhere in the region of £70 million.

A man who flopped so spectacularly at Steve McClaren’s Newcastle United looked to have a one-way ticket to the very top of the European game in his back pocket.

Flash forward to the present day and Thauvin is starting to make match-winning contributions and dominate the headlines again.

After returning from half a year on the treatment table, Thauvin is once again starting to dominate games at Ligue 1 level, reminding everyone why he was one of the most coveted forwards in the game not so long ago.

The 27-year-old followed up a stunning brace against Brest with the only goal of the game as Marseille beat bitter rivals Paris Saint-German for the first time in over a decade in a tempestuous Sunday night clash.

“We have this extraordinary creativity of Thauvin that we did not have last year, he is our great recruit,” says former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Villas-Boas, whose Marseille side finished second in 2019/20 without one of the most gifted footballers in France.

With his contract due to expire next summer, expect Marseille to act fast and put fresh terms on the table.

Tuttomercatoweb reported in August that Aston Villa and Leicester City are sniffing around, smelling a £13 million bargain.
