My Octopus Teacher arrived on Netflix on September 7th, 2020.

The incredible documentary tells the story of South African filmmaker Craig Foster and his remarkable relationship with a wild octopus.

My Octopus explores how Craig’s freediving hobby led him to encounter the most extraordinary of companions.

Over the course of a year, we see how two beings from completely different worlds can form the most heartwarming of bonds.


Who is Craig Foster?

Craig Foster is a South African filmmaker who resides in Cape Town and is the human star of My Octopus Teacher.

The 52-year-old, who free dives as a hobby after growing up near the ocean, first encountered the remarkable octopus in 2010 in a kelp forest while swimming off the coast of South Africa.

The pair’s bond initially began as simple curiosity as the octopus had disguised itself by surrounding itself in shells and over the months that followed, Craig began filming his interactions with the creature as an unlikely friendship formed.

As seen in the documentary, Craig Foster has a son by the name of Tom who he had with his ex-wife. According to The Cinemaholic, Craig is currently married to Indian environmental activist and reporter, Swati Thiyagarajan who is a key member of the Sea Change Project which Foster set up to help protect South Africa’s kelp forest and marine life.

As well as My Octopus Teacher, Craig Foster has worked on a wide array of documentary projects, the most prominent of which include his filmmaking debut The Great Dance: A Hunter’s Story, the TV series Wild Walk and the crocodile-focused Touching the Dragon.
