Liverpool youngster Neco Williams has been nominated for the coveted ‘Golden Boy 2020’ award after Tuttosport announced their 40-man shortlist.
The award – which the likes of Alphonso Davies and Erling Haaland have also been nominated for – has previously been won by some world-class footballers.
Six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi was named as 2005’s Golden Boy, while Manchester City front man Sergio Aguero won the award in 2007.
It is a fully deserved nomination for Williams, who has enjoyed a breakthrough year at Anfield.
The right-back – who scored a late winner against Bulgaria on his Wales debut earlier this month – made six Premier League appearances last term.
His reputation grew thanks to some impressive displays in the domestic cup competitions.
Jurgen Klopp now appears happy to have the 19-year-old as first-team backup to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Williams started the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, and has really cemented himself among the first-team at Anfield.
Should he win the award, he will be able to say he has followed in the footsteps of Messi, Aguero, and others such as Wayne Rooney and Cesc Fabregas.
Judging by the Liverpool youngster’s meteoric rise, there is no reason why he shouldn’t win it.
