Mikel Arteta told Emi Martinez that he would barely play for Arsenal this term, the Daily Mail report.
Martinez has hardly put a foot wrong since stepping into Arsenal’s goal, but Arteta informed him that Bernd Leno would still remain his number one.
Leno picked up an injury towards the back end of last season, but he was in goal for Arsenal on their first game of the season against Fulham.
Martinez now looks set to leave the Emirates Stadium to join Aston Villa in a £20 million deal (BBC Sport), as he is keen for regular first-team action.
Martinez has a strong connection with Arsenal, but Arteta apparently said to him that he would not even play in cup competition this term, which helped him make his mind up to move to Villa.
Arteta apparently wants to take the FA Cup and the League Cup seriously, which could have left Martinez’s chances of action at Arsenal slim.
Leno’s return is unlikely to cause much concern among Arsenal fans – as the German remains one of the finest stoppers in the Premier League.
However, Martinez’s departure may cause some disappointment, especially after his outstanding form towards the back end of last season.
