Darren Bent has claimed that it’s a ‘real shame’ that Emiliano Martinez is heading for the Arsenal exit doors amid rumours that Aston Villa are on the verge of signing him.

The former Premier League striker told talkSPORT (13/09/20 at 4:35 pm) that Martinez has ‘earned the right’ to go elsewhere and become someone else’s number one.

BBC Sport have reported that Villa will pay £20 million for Martinez’s talents and they have agreed on a four-deal for his services.

Whilst Martinez has been outstanding for Arsenal during these past few months, Bent thinks that it’s right that Bernd Leno hasn’t been stripped of his number one spot.

“You know what, Bernd Leno, before he got injured, was in superb form, so you cannot take that away from him,” Bent told talkSPORT.

“I really like Martinez. I think every Premier League team needs two very good goalkeepers. But it’s a shame for him. He has stepped in, and he has performed so well. He was brilliant in the cup final.

“I think he earned the right to go somewhere and become someone’s number one because he’s shown evidently that he’s too good to be a back-up. But, unfortunately, he is going to have to leave Arsenal to become a number one.

“He’ll forever be in Arsenal’s fans hearts for what he did for that football club. Playing well in the Cup final. But I would have always had Leno ahead of him, but it’s a real shame to see him leave.”

Arsenal’s record transfer deals

  1. Nicolas Pepe

    £72 million

  2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

    £56 million

  3. Alexandre Lacazette

    £52 million

  4. Thomas Partey

    45 million

  5. Mesut Ozil

    £42 million

Ideally, Mikel Arteta would have wanted to keep Martinez because it means he would then have some serious competiton for the goalkeeping spot.

But Martinez has been at the Emirates for a decade now and has been longing to become a number one, and if his recent performances cannot provide him with that chance in North London, then he will head to the West Midlands for that opportunity.

Villa already have a proven number one at their disposal in Tom Heaton, but the Englishmen is still recovering from injury
