It’s now available but where can I watch the Painted Bird online? Here’s how to check out one of the most controversial films in recent memory.

Why do we watch films?

There are many reasons; for entertainment, comfort, to learn about other cultures, ourselves, history.

There are plenty of audiences who don’t wish to be confronted by cinema. On the other hand, there are those who appreciate being challenged and subsequently seek out films which can be described by less seasoned viewers as endurance tests.

Cinephiles who seek boundary pushing efforts will be familiar with the likes of Gaspar Noé, Lars von Trier, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Carlos Reygadas and Michael Haneke.

However, this year, attention in these circles has been firmly on Czech director Václav Marhoul and his latest – and third – feature, The Painted Bird.

As an adaptation of Jerzy Kosiński’s 1965 novel of the same name, we centre on the agonising journey of a young boy as he navigates war-stricken Eastern Europe, encountering brutality and abuse at every single turn.

Its premiere at the 76th Venice International Film Festival prompted walkouts from disgusted audiences, yet it earned a standing ovation at the 35th Warsaw International Film Festival.

The film was destined to divide, but here’s how to see which side you sit on…
