Why is #cancelnetflix trending on Twitter?

The calls for Netflix to be cancelled come after the release of Cuties (2020) on September 8th, 2020.

This French film is the directorial debut of Maïmouna Doucouré. It premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it was met with positive reviews and Maïmouna won the Directing Award.

However, Cuties has not been well received since it landed on Netflix. In fact, the streaming site was in hot water as a result of its marketing of Cuties. The promotional poster and trailer for the film were condemned as allegedly sexualising the young female characters. Netflix swiftly apologised for their promotional choices but still went ahead with the film’s release.

Twitter calls for Netflix to be ‘cancelled’

On September 10th, 2020, the controversy reached boiling point. The hashtag #cancelnetflix made it to the top of Twitter’s trending list in the US and the UK.

Although the film was not received as controversial when it premiered at Sundance or by French viewers, viewers at home have an incredibly different viewpoint.

One critic tweeted: “We have this mainstream platform that not only sexualizes young girls but also promotes it!”

Another stated their problem with Cuties: “I wasn’t planning watching Cuties, I gave it a benefit of a doubt because it was produced by a black woman and hyper sexualiztion with black girls is problem. I saw a few clips….#CancelNetflix.” They accompanied this statement with a photograph saying “Our expectations were low but HOLY F***.”

What do Netflix have to say?

Netflix have yet to respond to the thousands of customers who have cancelled their subscriptions.

It is unclear as of yet whether they will remove Cuties from their platform but we are awaiting on the news of Netflix’s decision.
