It was a bit of a coincidence that Gini Wijnaldum played on the right-wing for Holland yesterday amid Ronald Koeman’s interest in the Liverpool man.

The decision didn’t go unnoticed by a number of supporters who feel that Liverpool’s midfielder was being used to seemingly audition for a move to the Nou Camp.

The Guardian have previously reported that new Barca boss, Koeman, wants to sign the 29-year-old from Anfield this summer after working with him on the international stage.

Holland are now in the hands of Koeman’s former assistant – they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Italy in the Nations League on Tuesday – and the decision was taken to play Liverpool’s underrated talent out on the right.

When on national duty before, Wijnaldum has played further up the field in the middle of the park for Koeman, and given his versatility, it’s quite clear why he’s wanted in Catalan now.

A selection of supporters mocked the decision to play Wijnladum as a number 11, as they feel it contributed to him and the team not producing their best performance on the night.

But it wouldn’t be a surprise if Wijnaldum is being used in various positions to try and showcase why he’s wanted and needed in La Liga.
