The Boys season 2 arrived on Amazon Prime Video on September 4th but Homelander’s breast milk-drinking scene has unsettled fans.
When it arrived on our screens in 2019, The Boys well and truly flipped the superhero genre on its head.
For well over a decade, Marvel’s Avengers and DC’s Justice League have always shown their superheroes to be just that, heroes.
The Boys takes that idea and tosses it aside with its Avengers-esque superhero team, the Seven, who are run for profit by the Vought International corporation while members of the team have grown arrogant and corrupt in the years they’ve been active.
The leader of the Seven is a ‘hero’ by the name of Homelander, a combination of Captain America and Superman but unlike his heroic counterparts, Homelander is a truly nasty piece of work.
It’s something we’ve known throughout The Boys but in the opening episode of season 2, we get a timely reminder as Homelander gets up close and personal with a bottle of milk, breast milk.
The Boys season 2 on Amazon Prime Video
Season 2 of The Boys starts releasing on Amazon Prime Video on September 4th.
The new instalment continues the story of Billy Butcher and the Boys as their conflict with the Seven and Vought International cranks up a few more notches.
Season 1 ended on the dramatic revelation that Billy’s wife, Becca, who he thought had disappeared at the hands of Homelander, the leader of the Seven, was actually alive and well and has been secretly raising her and Homelander’s son.
Homelander’s milk obession
In the opening episode of season 2, once the dust gets chance to settle, Homelander ends up in what was Madelyn Stillwell’s office at Vought International.
In the office’s fridge, Homelander discovers a bottle of milk, breat milk.
The unstable supe is obviously excited by the find and can be seen licking his lips as he uses his heat vision to warm the milk up before taking a rather intimate swig.
It’s no secret that Stillwell had a degree of control over Homelander in season 1, with the ‘hero’ harbouring some pretty serious mother issues with Madelyn, which all came to a head in season 1 when Homelander killed Stillwell.
While Stillwell may longer be in the picture, Homelander still has this strange connection to her which can be seen in the rather grotesque milk-drinking scene.
Homelander actor, Antony Starr, is quoted in the Sun prior to season 2’s release saying: “She wasn’t willing to let Homelander expand in season one and fulfil what he believed he was capable of – his mission, so to speak.
“He dealt with his Oedipal complex at the end of season one, and I think season two has been a lot about trying to find his place… season one was very external, whereas season two’s very internal.
“And I guess there’s nothing more internal than milk and as a way to connect the dots between season one and two and bring Stillwell back into his world a little bit, he finds traces of Stillwell, and reconnects that way.”
The Boys season 2 began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on September 4th, 2020 with new episodes releasing weekly on Fridays.
