The Boys on Amazon Prime Video
Season 1 of The Boys arrived on Amazon Prime Video on July 26th, 2019.
The series revolves around a group of superheroes known as the Seven. They’re the equivalent of the Avengers or the Justice League.
However, the Seven are owned and ran for profit by the Vought International corporation and the members of the team have grown arrogant and corrupt in the years they’ve been active.
Billy Butcher and his team, the titular Boys, are a vigilante group who seek to keep the superpowered Seven in check.
The Boys: Season 1 recap
The storyline of The Boys season 1 focuses on Billy Butcher and his team’s mission on keeping the super-powered Seven in check.
Butcher has long-been distrustful of superheroes and suspects that Homelander, the leader of the Seven, is behind the disappearance of his wife, Becca.
New members are added to both the Boys and the Seven in the form of Hughie, who joins the Boys after his girlfriend was killed by one of the Seven, and Annie (aka Starlight) is welcomed as a fresh-faced member of the Seven but quickly realises the group aren’t all they’re made out to be, especially with Vought International pulling the strings.
Season 1 sees a number of exchanges and confrontations between the Boys and members of the Seven with the power-enhancing Compound-V at the heart of much of the action.
There are casualties aplenty throughout season 1 with Seven member Translucent, A-Train’s partner, Popclaw, and Mesmer, who betrayed the Boys for Homelander, all biting the dust.
Despite being on opposite sides, Hughie and Annie start to fall for each other, something that puts them both in danger while the Deep is faced with exile from the Seven after forcing Annie into oral sex when she joins the Seven.
In the season finale, Compound-V, which was used to give the character Female her powers, is listed as a controlled substance by the Pentagon and the Boys are classed as outlaws.
The season ends dramatically with Homelander taking Butcher to see his wife, Becca, who has been raising her and Homelander’s son in secret.
The revelation that Homelander fathered a child with Butcher’s wife leaves him in shock as the credits roll and we’re left with an agonising wait for season 2.
