Andros Townsend thinks Jose Mourinho needs to ‘sell’ Tanguy Ndombele because his current situation with the Tottenham midfielder could result in the player ‘turning’ the chairman against his manager and getting him the sack, as he told talkSPORT (02/09/20 at 7:30 am).

The Daily Mail have claimed that Mourinho has doubts over Ndombele’s willingness to learn and Spurs are prepared to listen to offers for his services.

It has been a disastrous first 12 months for Ndombele in England’s top-flight, as Tottenham’s record signing has struggled to make his mark.

With Ndombele’s future in doubt, Crystal Palace winger, Townsend, warned that situations such as this could turn on the manager and he could end up getting the sack if he doesn’t deal with it properly.

“I remember when Ndombele first joined Spurs and all the players were raving about him and about how good he is,” Townsend told talkSPORT. “But managers prefer different systems and different players. For one reason, or another, Jose Mourinho’s just not interested in that type of player.

“I have seen it before where the manager has publicly come out and criticised the player. If you keep that player in your squad after criticising him and it keeps festering. He maybe speaks to his agent saying ‘I need to leave’. He speaks to the chairman saying ‘You spent all this money on me, I need to be playing’.

“It can end up on the player turning the chairman against the manager and maybe, in the end, getting the manager the sack. For Jose Mourinho, if he doesn’t fancy the player he has got to sell him for his own good.”

Ndombele has the qualities to carry the ball with real ease and cause problems to opposition defences. But it’s when he hasn’t got the ball that’s when the real issues crop up.

Under a Mourinho system, what the players do without the ball is perhaps more important than what they do with it and Ndombele has been nowhere near the standard required.

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  2. Joe Hart

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

  5. Gareth Bale

As a result, it isn’t a surprise that his future is in doubt, but he could also come back to haunt Tottenham because there’s definitely a talented player in there.

So, a big decision awaits Mourinho and Daniel Levy this summer.
