Tottenham Hotspur have signed a new right back in recent days, with Matt Doherty joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Irishman will likely be Jose Mourinho’s first choice in that position, but could Spurs still add another option there this summer?
Kyle Walker-Peters has been sold to Southampton, whilst Serge Aurier’s future seems unclear amid interest in his signature.
If Aurier goes, Gedson Fernandes may be relied upon to continue his development as a right back, of Spurs could look for a cheap option.
With that in mind, The Mirror reported (23/08, p65) that Tottenham want to sign Benfica right back Tomas Tavares for just £9million.
The 19-year-old is a hot prospect over in Mourinho’s native Portugal, and could be a talent to develop behind the more experienced Doherty.
Fans have noticed that Tavares has posted a photo of a Tottenham shirt on his Instagram story, with Gedson’s shirt on the back of it.
Some supporters wondered whether Tavares was teasing fans given those Spurs links, but it seems that the defender and a number of Portuguese pals have been exchanging shirts.
Gedson himself posted photos of shirts from Tavares, Benfica’s Florentino Luis and Everton goalkeeper Joao Virginia, seemingly sending a shirt of his own to Tavares.
Tavares should still be a name to keep an eye on if Spurs do go for another right back, and maybe he will end up with a Tottenham shirt of his own at some point, with the potential to join Gedson in North London.
