Tottenham Hotspur have had a £1.8 million bid rejected by Barcelona for youngster Lucas de Vega but, according to Sport, the Catalan kings could consider selling for £3.5 million.

With the myriad problems facing a Barca side that appears to be lurching from crisis to catastrophe at the moment, the potential departure of a 20-year-old who has yet to make a La Liga appearance would understandably fly under the radar.

But amid claims De Vega wants to leave La Masia for Tottenham, according to La Verdad, this highlights a wider problem at Camp Nou.

Ten years ago, Barcelona’s academy system was the envy of world football, with Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique among those to rise through the ranks to conquer the continent.

However, with the path from B team to senior squad seemingly blocked by a host of underperforming fading stars, the best young talent in Spain seems to be flooding out the door.

De Vega looks set to follow in the footsteps of Pedro Moreno, Xavi Simons and Manchester United newbie Marc Jurado.

The Brazilian wants to swap Catalonia for north London, with Tottenham having an initial bid rejected.

However, a £3.5 million offer could be enough to get the deal done and raise more fears about the direction this once-inspirational Barcelona side are heading.
