Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has stepped in to negotiations for Gabriel to try and help secure the signature of the Lille defender, The Telegraph report.
Raul Sanllehi had been leading the bidding process for the Brazilian defender, but he left Arsenal last week.
Sanllehi’s departure has meant that other members of Arsenal’s staff have had to step up their responsibilities, and Arteta is now said to have taken charge of their move for Gabriel.
Arsenal have made good progress in their bid to sign the 22-year-old, and are now thought to be closing in on his signature.
The Gunners have agreed a fee worth around £20 million for the centre-back, according to the Telegraph, and are now waiting for the player to decide whether he wants a move to the Emirates Stadium.
Napoli are also in the running for the Lille man, who has shone in France this season, but Arteta may be hoping that his influence can help get the deal over the line.

If Arsenal are to sign Gabriel he should be an exciting addition to their squad.
Arsenal have already signed William Saliba, and if they could partner him with Gabriel, then they would have two of the most exciting defensive prospects to emerge from Ligue 1 lining up for them next season.
