Yellowstone season 3 is almost over but episode 9 took the time to pay tribute to Wilford Brimley but just who was he and did he ever appear in Yellowstone?
Since it first arrived on our screens in 2018, Yellowstone has become essential viewing on Paramount Network with season 3 proving to be the most gripping season yet.
After a tense finale to episode 8 left fans fearing for Teeter and Colby, episode 9 brought us the good news that the pair had survived their run-in with Wade Morrow and his son.
However, the attack left the Duttons on a vengeful warpath and a host of bunkhouse boys, led by Rip, went to exact their revenge.
After an episode filled with bloodshed and pledges of loyalty, fans were greeted with a touching tribute to Wilford Brimley just before the credits started to roll.
But just who is Wilford Brimley and what was his connection to Yellowstone?
Yellowstone season 3 on Paramount Network
Season 3 of Yellowstone arrived on Paramount Network back on June 21st.
The 10-episode season, which is due to end on August 23rd, is proving to be the most dramatic yet as the Dutton ranch faces a new threat as planning goes ahead for an airport to be built on their land.
And beyond that, tensions with rival ranchers have come to a head in bloody fashion.
Who is Wilford Brimley?
In the final moments before episode 9’s credits rolled, Yellowstone took a moment to pay touching tribute to Wilford Brimley who passed away at the age of 85 on August 1st, 2020.
“In loving memory of Wilford Brimley,” the message read, “A cowboy, an artist and a damn good friend.”
For those not familiar with him, Wilford Brimley was an actor, singer and US Marines veteran.
Brimley was born in Salt Lake City in Utah in September 1934 and at the age of just 19, signed up to be a part of the US Marine Corps and fought in the Korean War between 1953 and 1956.
Wilford Brimley’s acting career began tentatively in the 1960s when he appeared as extras and stuntmen in a host of Western films.
By the 1970s, however, Brimley had started to establish himself as a character actor in his own right and during an illustrious career, he held roles in films such as The Thing, The Natural, Cocoon as well as In & Out.
Wilford Brimley never held a role in Yellowstone which makes his tribute in episode 9 somewhat surprising.
Although, the first three seasons of Yellowstone were all filmed in Utah, where Grimley proudly hailed from and as an actor well-known for Westerns, a tribute title card seems fitting.
Yellowstone fans pay tribute on social media
It’s safe to say that the tribute to Wilford Brimley in Yellowstone has gone down well with fans who wasted no time in taking to social media to offer their thoughts.
One fan on Twitter wrote: “What a great tribute to #wilfordbrimley and an excellent episode.”
While another added: “Great tribute to Wilford Brimley. Best show on tv just keeps getting better. But 1 show left just isn’t enough. See ya next week.”
Season 3 of Yellowstone concludes on Paramount Network in the US on August 23rd, 2020 with episode 10.
