Agent Giovanni Becali has played down speculation linking Crystal Palace with a move for Florinel Coman, telling AntenaSport that there is ‘absolutely nothing concrete’ on the table just yet.
While Neymar and Kylian Mbappe combined in sensational style to fire PSG into the Champions League semi-finals at Atalanta’s expense, there was an intriguing Crystal Palace subplot on show at the Estadio da Luz.
After all, the £13 million winger linked with a move to Selhurst Park has been compared to both of the Paris Saint-Germain superstars.
Gigi Becali, Steaua Bucharest’s outspoken owner, believes Coman is Romania’s answer to Neymar while the legendary Gheorghe Hagi is convinced that the 22-year-old is ‘the same’ as World Cup winner Mbappe.
No wonder there are pulses racing in South London, then, with Coman’s agent telling Fanatik this week that Crystal Palace were mulling over a bid for a skilful attacker who produced 15 goals and 11 assists in 2019/20.
But, with the hype machine going into overdrive, Becali is now attempting to calm things down a little.
It seems there are a few crossed wires here.
“Stop talking nonsense. Do the people at Crystal Palace want him? Who told you they wanted him? I didn’t say anything. I said I offered the player everywhere, to England, Italy, America, Spain, everywhere,” says Becali, the cousin of Steaua president Gigi.
“I introduced him to the teams. When a club is 100 per cent interested and knows what Gigi is about and how much he wants, then they will talk. Until then, nothing.
“The only offers were from Sporting and Orlando. I have absolutely nothing concrete.”
Clearly, Becali had been in touch with Palace to ask whether they would be keen to sign his highly-rated client, perhaps in the knowledge that the Eagles are targeting a winger capable of replacing Wilfried Zaha.
Palace, it seems, are yet to make a decision about whether or not Coman is the right man for the post-Wilf era.
