Who is Kamala Harris?
Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician and lawyer who has been a senator in California since 2017.
The 55-year-old from Oakland, California graduated from Howard University and University of California’s Hastings College of Law.
She has previously been a district attorney in San Francisco and general attorney in California before becoming California’s third-ever female senator.
She’s running with Joe Biden as Vice President
Joe Biden, the democratic candidate in the next US presidential election has just revealed that he has chosen Kamala Harris to be his potential Vice President.
She is the first African-American and the first Asian-American to be chosen as the running mate of a major party’s presidential candidate.
Kamala thanked Biden on Twitter, saying: “I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”
Who are Kamala Harris’ parents?
Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan was a breast cancer scientist who emigrated from India in 1960 to study a doctorate in endocrinology at UC Berkeley. She sadly died of colon cancer in 2009.
Kamala’s father, Donald Harris is a professor of economics at Stanford University who emigrated from British Jamaica in 1961 to study economics at UC Berkeley. Over the years, he has published many books about Jamaican economics.
They both met whilst studying at UC Berkeley and were both involved with the civil rights movement. The pair divorced when Kamala was 7-years-old.
