Sheffield United and Brighton are willing to pay £13 million for Almeria striker Darwin Nunez, according to La Voz de Almeria.
Of course, any young Uruguayan striker will have to deal with being compared to a national legend like Edinson Cavani at some point in his career.
But that ‘new Cavani’ tag is no lazy, tabloid-driven millstone hanging like an anchor around his neck.
Blessed with explosive pace, lethal finishing and the burning heart of a warrior, Nunez has certainly justified those comparisons with PSG’s all-time top scorer this season.
With 16 goals in total, the 21-year-old has fired a big-spending Almeria side into promotion contention as the Segunda play-offs loom into view.
And, after being linked with a move to a Southampton side famed for their ability to unearth diamonds in the rough, reports from Spain suggest that there are two more Premier League clubs sniffing around.
Sheffield United and Brighton both enjoyed impressive 2019/20 campaigns but perhaps lack the ruthless finisher capable of turning draws into wins, defeats into draws.
La Voz claims that the Blades and the Seagulls have identified Nunez as the man to take them to the next level, with £13 million offers being prepared.
“He is a fast, very strong attacker. He has physical strength and good instincts, like Cavani. He can thrive in the penalty area,” Mariano Bogliacino, a Uruguayan winger formerly of Napoli, told Radio Kiss Kiss recently.
If Almeria fall in the play-offs, they may have no choice but to sell a player who, like a young Cavani, has everything to go right to the top.
