Newcastle United are set to beat Aston Villa in the race to sign Jeff Hendrick, according to the Daily Mail.
Newcastle are now closing in on landing Hendrick, who is a free agent, following the expiration of his contract at Burnley.
The 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international is now ‘close’ to agreeing a move to Newcastle, with the transfer thought to be in its final stages.
Villa had apparently attempted to bring in the central midfielder too, but Dean Smith’s side appear to have fallen short in the race.
Hendrick may not be the most exciting of signings for Newcastle, but on a free transfer, he unquestionably represents value for money.
The former Derby County man is comfortable playing in central midfield or on the right, and he should bolster Newcastle’s options for the upcoming campaign.
While Hendrick may not be a guaranteed starter at St. James’ Park, he was always a reliable figure at Burnley, and he should have no problem fitting in with Steve Bruce’s side.
Bruce has made Newcastle resilient and tough to beat during his time on Tyneside, and Hendrick’s arrival will only add more steel to their midfield options for next term.
