Recent years have seen an explosion in the popularity of true crime documentaries with Netflix providing some of the most talked-about series out there from Making a Murderer to The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
The most recent addition to Netflix’s growing library of true crime docuseries comes in the form of The World’s Most Wanted which details the alleged crimes of some of the planet’s most wanted individuals.
The subject of episode 3 is Samantha Lewthwaite, an individual of notable significance here in the UK as she’s alleged to be involved in the 7/7 London bombings in 2005.
But just what does the World’s Most Wanted reveal about Samantha Lewthwaite and where is she thought to be now?
World’s Most Wanted on Netflix
World’s Most Wanted arrived on Netflix on August 5th, 2020.
The true crime documentary details the alleged crimes and misdeeds of a plethora of some of the world’s most wanted individuals from Mafia dons to Russian crime bosses.
Episode 3 is particularly pertinent for UK Netflix viewers as it focuses on a woman by the name of Samantha Lewthwaite, nicknamed ‘the White Widow,’ who is thought to have been involved in the 7/7 bombings in London in 2005.
Who is Samantha Lewthaite?
Samantha Lewthwaite was born in Banbridge, County Down in Northern Ireland on December 5th, 1983 but moved to Aylesbury in England with her family at a young age.
She studied politics and religion at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London but dropped out before completing the course.
Samantha was raised a Christian by her parents, Andrew and Elizabeth, but when they split up in 1995, Samantha looked for solace from her Muslim neighbours and at the age of 17 converted to Islam herself, changing her name to Sherafiyah in the process according to The Scotsman.
Samantha later met Germaine Lindsay and on October 30th, 2002, the pair married and had a child together and Samantha was pregnant with their second by the summer of 2005.
On July 7th, 2005, Germaine was one of four suicide bombers who detonated explosive devices on public transport in London, killing 52 people as well as themselves, injuring over 780 more people in the process.
Where is Samantha Lewthwaite now?
- Samantha Lewthwaite’s exact whereabouts are unknown at the time of writing although her last known location is believed to be Kenya.
As the Netflix documentary explains, Lewthwaite was allegedly linked to a swathe of terror attacks in Africa in the early 2010s, most notably a grenade attack in Mombasa and a shopping mall shooting in Westgate, Nairobi.
Lewthwaite was placed on Interpol’s Red Notice list on Kenyan charges of alleged possession of explosives with conspiracy to commit a felony according to BBC News.
The same source stated in 2014 that Lewthwaite had been seen in Kenya and that there was a huge operation to have her arrested.
However, the woman disappeared after police officers attempted taking her from the coastal town of Lamu to a Kenyan military base in Somalia.
As the Netflix documentary explains, Lewthwaite is believed to has gone off the radar somewhere along the Kenya-Somalia border.
