Crystal Palace want to sign £20 million-rated Norwich City play-maker Emi Buendia while Aston Villa could make a move if Jack Grealish goes, according to the Sun (9 August, page 60).
Things change quickly in football. Just ask Aston Villa.
A few months ago, it seemed only a matter of time before captain fantastic Grealish was bidding an emotional farewell to Villa Park, swapping claret and blue for the red of Manchester United.
After Dean Smith’s side escaped from the drop on the final day of the season, the smart money is suddenly on Grealish sticking around for one more year.
Guaranteed Premier League football, coupled with football’s financial fall-out, means the Midland giants are now expected to keep their £80 million talisman.
That fee appears to have forced United to place him on the back-burner as long as they see Jadon Sancho as target number one (Mail).
As a result, the chances of Aston Villa making a move for the £20 million-rated Buendia look slim right now. But, as we said, things change quickly in football.
The Sun reports that Norwich’s scheming Spaniard has been lined up as a potential replacement for Grealish at Villa Park, with Crystal Palace and newly-promoted Leeds United both interested too.
Only Kevin de Bruyne, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aston Villa’s talismanic number ten created more chances than Buendia in the 2019/20 season, with seven assists produced in a struggling side who finished bottom of the table.
Considering that Palace scored a meagre 31 goals in 38 games, Buendia’s penchant for a defence-splitting pass would be well received at Selhurst Park.
