On July 21st 2020, the San Luis Obispo Police Department arrested Tianna at the end of a five-hour Black Lives Matter protest.

The San Luis Obispo PD wants county prosecutors to charge Tianna with five felonies and three misdemeanours related to her July 21 arrest.

Another protestor, Elias Bautista, was also arrested after the event had peacefully dispersed.

Chief deputy district attorney Jerret Gran said that the police department is recommending a total of eight charges against Tianna: four felony counts of false imprisonment; one felony count of conspiracy; one count of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, a misdemeanour; one count of inciting a riot, a misdemeanour; and one misdemeanour count of unlawful assembly.

What is next for Tianna Arata?

The arraignment date is September 3rd. The Tribune said: “Prosecutors will now have to decide whether each charge is merited, and if so, whether they feel they can prove each charge beyond a reasonable doubt to a jury.”

A GoFundMe was created to cover Tianna’s legal costs, but only $10,000 of that will cover legal fees. The rest will go to bail funds for other social justice activists, according to the website.

The GoFundMe page for Tianna supports her innocence. It says:

“On Tuesday July 21, 2020, Tianna organized another peaceful protest. The false media has reported that the protest was a riot. A car windshield was broken, and a “child was in the car.” However, there was no child and no indicator that the people protesting broke the windshield. The media also said that protesters threw objects at law enforcement however, this wasn’t the case.”

“During the protest, a car ambushed Tianna’s body, almost hitting her. She was terrified and used whatever was in her hands to hit the car and protect herself. Instead of finding the person who tried to hit her, the San Luis Obispo police department arrested Tianna for rioting, unlawful assembly, conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment, and resisting arrest. There are also videos that show that Tianna was not resisting arrest. The San Luis Obispo police department has targeted her, throwing her whatever charges they could possibly get away with.”
