Roman Kemp returned to his Capital FM breakfast show this morning, 10th August, after taking a break following the devastating news of his producer and “best friend” Joe Lyons.
Joe Lyons had been a producer at Global radio, the parent company of Capital for nine years and was well-loved amongst the staff, often nicknamed as ‘producer Joe’.
Joe Lyons passed away suddenly on Tuesday 4th August last week and Roman Kemp along with co-stars Sian Welby and Sonny Jay took time off the show after hearing the sad news.
Who is Joe Lyons?
- Joe Lyons was the Senior Producer at Capital Breakfast from April 2017.
Roman and Joe had worked with each other on his Capital Evening Show from March 2016 until they both moved to his Breakfast show.
Joe was educated at the University of Leeds and had a Masters in Radio Journalism from Goldsmith’s College, University of London.
It was clear Joe was loved amongst Romans family as his mother Shirlie Kemp commented on Joe’s final Instagram post: “God Bless you Joe …. you were and always will be so loved.”
Roman Kemp paid a heartfelt tribute to his late friend on the breakfast show this morning, August 10.
“He was the very first person I met when I walked through the door,” said Roman. “I remember thinking he was a bit of a Del Boy.”
The atmosphere at the studio understandably felt empty as Roman tearfully added: “He was with me right from my very first show. He taught me everything. I don’t know sitting in a radio studio without him.”
The cause of Joe Lyons death is still unknown, but the tributes prevail and thousands of people have taken to Instagram to comment “RIP Joe” on his most recent and final post. Vicky Hope also posted an emotional caption to the tribute shared to her Instagram.
