According to Tuttosport, Torino have joined the race to sign Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira who wants to move back to Italy this summer.

The Uruguay international joined Arsenal from Sampdoria for £27 million in 2018.

Torreira initially delighted supporters with his tenacity and never-say-die attitude. However, he soon fell out of favour following the sacking of former boss Unai Emery.

A report back in April by Corriere dello Sport claimed AC Milan are interested in him. Moreover, the player is said to want to return to Serie A.

Milan’s reported interest in the player has gone cold of late.

But the latest reports from Italy claim he has another suitor in Torino, with Tuttosport also adding that Torreira has clearly expressed his willingness to return to Italy.

Torreira has barely featured under Mikel Arteta. The 24-year-old last completed a full 90 minutes in January, while in his last start at Aston Villa he was hauled off at half-time.

Arsenal’s budget this summer may be limited due to the global health pandemic.

Arteta will want to strengthen his side, with another defender and midfielder top priorities.

Torreira will surely be deemed a potential asset to raise funds this summer. While the Gunners can’t expect to recoup the full £27 million, they could still get a decent fee.

Torino underachieved last season, finishing in 16th place in Serie A. The Turin-based club need a touch of quality, and Torreira could provide that spark for the club.
