Harlots arrives on BBC Two and iPlayer in August but where was the raunchy period drama filmed? Can you visit the Harlots filming location?

There’s nothing better than a period drama to take your mind away from the stresses of life and a series filled with plenty of twists and turns and enough debauchery to shake a stick at will surely make for popular viewing.

That series, of course, is Harlots which arrives on BBC Two and iPlayer in August 2020 after several years on the US streaming service, Hulu.

Harlots, which tells the stories of a number of Georgian sex workers, takes place in 1760s London but given the constant modernisation of London, a different filming location had to be used.

But just where was Harlots filmed?

Harlots on BBC Two and iPlayer

Harlots arrives with a double bill on BBC Two and iPlayer on August 5th 2020.

The BBC’s acquisition of Harlots comes after the series aired on the US streaming service, Hulu, and the now-defunct ITV Encore channel here in the UK.

Harlots primarily follows the character of Margaret Wells (Samantha Morton), a brothel’s madam, as she looks to improve the lives of herself and her ‘family’ of sex workers by moving to Greek Street in Soho.

In doing so, Margaret steps on some notable toes and a dramatic rivalry ensues.

Where was Harlots filmed?

  • Harlots was filmed primarily at Langleybury Mansion in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire.

The other main location listed for the series’ production was Chiswick House in the Chiswick area of London.

However, the vast majority of filming does take place at Langleybury Mansion, including the scenes set in London as sets for Soho’s Greek Street and Covent Garden were built on either side of the main house.

Location spotlight: Langleybury Mansion

The history of Langleybury Mansion dates as far back as 1720 when the previous house on the site was demolished to make way for the current manor which was built by Georgian judge and politician Robert Raymond.

The ownership Langleybury Mansion was passed between several families and notable barons until 1947 when the house was sold to Hertfordshire County Council and converted into a school and in 1953 it was designated as a Grade II listed building.

Langleybury School closed in 1996 and the house has been used as a filming location for a number of productions in the decades since while the grounds and some outbuildings are also used as an airsoft venue.

Notable productions include 1999’s Hope and Glory, 2007’s St Trinian’s, 2013’s Diana, 2015’s In the Heart of the Sea and BBC comedy Inside No 9 have all filmed at Langleybury Mansion.

Harlots, which was filmed at Langleybury Mansion, starts on BBC Two and iPlayer on August 5th, 2020.
