Tottenham Hotspur were in the bottom half of the league table when Jose Mourinho took charge of the club. Not many people gave Spurs a chance to make it into the European spots but they managed to accomplish that.
Mourinho was visibly delighted as Tottenham sealed sixth place on the final day of the season. Spurs had made it into the Europa League group stages but their next door neighbours made things a little more difficult for them.
Arsenal clinched the FA Cup and, as a result, they have taken Tottenham’s spot in the group stages of the Europa League. Spurs now have to play three extra games to qualify, which is something Mourinho would not have wanted after a hectic season.
Tottenham are already struggling with their squad depth and these extra games increase the chances of injury. Harry Kane is one Spurs player who has struggled after being overused season after season and Mourinho seriously needs to address that situation.
Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura have both been used as a number nine during Kane’s absence but it hasn’t really been the same. Troy Parrott will go out on loan to Milwall, which leaves Spurs in a difficult situation up top.
A new striker has to be a priority for Tottenham
Spurs desperately need a backup striker and it looks like they have had one in mind for over eight months.
beIN Sports claim that Tottenham are leading the race to sign Metz’s Habib Diallo this summer. Spurs missed out on signing the Senegalese international who has scored 12 goals this season in January.
Diallo’s agent, Thierno Seydi, confirmed to APS in June that Tottenham had made an offer for the 25-year-old in the January transfer window but a move then failed to materialise.
The report claims that Tottenham could quickly go on the offensive to sign Diallo this summer. Metz are also open to a sale which could make things easier for Mourinho if he decides to go through with the deal in the coming weeks.
