There’s lots of good TV around at the moment and the promise of more on the way after Netflix dropped a new trailer on Tuesday – but who is nurse Mildred Ratched?
The striking character is already well known, with her name being almost synonymous with the stereotype of a cold matronly figure.
But Netflix’s new interpretation of the nurse could cause many film fans to question what they know about her.

Who is nurse Mildred Ratched?
- Nurse Mildred Ratched is a fictional character from One Flew Over The Cookoo’s Nest.
In Ken Kesey’s 1962 book and the later 1975 film she was portrayed as cold and heartless. Sarah Paulson has been cast to play her in the new series.
However in Netflix’s prequel about the nurse, Mildred’s character is going to aim to be more developed and show different aspects to her persona.
Producer Ryan Murphy told Vanity Fair that it was interesting trying to develop Mildred’s character. He said this was because she was “almost like a catchphrase for any sort of institutional abuse of power”.
Speaking about her role, Sarah Paulson told the publication she “identified deeply with her loneliness”. She also said she believes Mildred is in “pursuit of survival and of finding some sense of home”.

- Ratched was inspired by the unforgettable character of Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. It is a prequel to the book.
The drama tells the story of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched who arrives at a psychiatric hospital in Northern California in 1947.

Things turn dark pretty quickly as the hospital is conducting experiments on the human mind.
Although Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, she has an inner darkness.
What is the release date for Nurse Ratched?
- Ratched is set to be released on Netflix on Friday September 18.
But to get viewers through the next six weeks, Netflix have already released a trailer for the show.
The clip shows nurse Ratched arriving at the hospital and immediately showing off her blunt personality as she tells a man to “bathe more often”.
In another scene she stares down another nurse and the two of them get into a debate about “who would put their name on a peach”.
However its also hinted that Ratched’s got a sensitive side. In one emotional clip she talks about “how different she would be” if someone had shown her “mercy”.
The show also stars Alice Englert as Dolly, Judy Davis as Nurse Betsy Bucket and Cynthia Nixon as Gwendolyn Briggs among others.
