John Hartson has urged Leigh Griffiths to ‘get his act together’ after he was left out of Celtic’s squad which beat Hamilton 5-1 on the opening game of the Scottish Premiership season.
Leading up to the new season, Griffiths fitness has been questioned, as Hartson made it clear that Celtic don’t need another forward if he ‘gets himself fit’, as he told Sky Sports Football (02/08/20 at 19:00 pm).
Odsonne Edouard netted a hat-trick for Neil Lennon’s men, with Patryk Klimala coming off the bench and also adding his name to the scoresheet.
Hartson was asked about what areas Celtic need to improve on in the transfer market, as he offered his thoughts on the forward areas.
“Forward wise, it’s a case of you have got Edouard, Bayo, Klimala and there’s a lad sitting at home that is probably, he needs to get his act together,” Hartson told Sky Sports.
“He needs to get his act together in terms of proving to his manager that he is right, physically, mentally to come back into the group. To get back onto the pitch where he should be because he’s a top-class player and a top-class goalscorer.
“And he should be out there. He should be with the group. He should be involved. But for whatever reason, the manager feels he’s not ready. I am looking for him out there [looks out onto the Celtic Park pitch] and he’s nowhere to be seen. He’s not even here today, Leigh Griffiths.
“I hope he’s listening, I hope he’s at home and I hope he’s getting his act together because we don’t need another centre-forward if he gets himself fit. He has got over 100 goals for the club. Magnificent.”
Griffiths’ return to the Celtic team towards the back end of last season, added with his form, saw Celtic steamroll the title.
It’s pretty clear to all what he is capable of when he is producing the goods, not forgetting that he is capable of playing on his own and also building strong partnerships up top.
Lennon still has time to decide on bringing in a new face in the final third, and if he does, then it may spell trouble for Griffiths.
