The rollercoaster ride that was The Blacklist season 7 finale is over, but fans are eager to know if and when the show will return for season 8.

When it comes to FBI dramas, not many series do it better than NBC’s The Blacklist.

With consistent storyline, good character development and slick production, The Blacklist has been a staple show in the NBC TV schedule ever since its premiere in 2013.

Now that season 7 has come to a thrilling conclusion, fans are desperate to know if and when the series will be returning for season 8.

The Blacklist season 8: Renewal status

  • Fans of The Blacklist will be happy to hear that The Blacklist has been renewed for season 8.

To be honest, most fans are not particularly surprised at this news with viewing figures up 7% and the finale ending with a major cliff-hanger. However, it is welcomed news nonetheless.

NBC are clearly huge fans of the show (or its viewing figures) with the network’s co-presidents, Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, announcing that the show will return with great excitement.

“We couldn’t be more excited to continue Red and Liz’s story into season eight.” – Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta.

Since then, the shows creator Jon Bokenkamp has revealed some more details about the upcoming eighth season. Speaking at Comic-Con 2020 he said of Liz’s season 7 finale behaviour: “While that arc may seem a little accelerated because it was done in that final episode, I think it’s gonna be very clear where she’s going when we start next season.

“I think it blows everything up in sort of the best way possible. I think it’s an inevitable turn that is going to be really fun to watch unravel and blow things up.” – Jon Bokenkamp.

The Blacklist season 8: Release date

  • At the time of writing, an official release date for The Blacklist season 8 has not been set, but we expect an early-2021 premiere.

Whilst an official premiere date has not been confirmed by NBC, we can use the release schedule for previous seasons to make a prediction.

Four of The Blacklists seven previous seasons have premiered in September, with the other two in October. So, we could potentially see Red return in just a matter of months.

However, considering the global pandemic delaying the production of many shows, this will likely be pushed back – a more realistic prediction would be early-2021.

The Blacklist season 8: Storyline

  • At the time of writing, there are very few details as to the potential storyline that season 8 will take.

Season 7 of The Blacklist ended with Elizabeth choosing her mother’s side over Raymond’s. Obviously, this is a huge development in her particular storyline, but where could season 8 take this?

Speaking to entertainment weekly, the shows executive producers Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath spoke about the possible implications for Elizabeth and the task force moving forward.

“Liz understands that Katarina is a very dangerous spy and someone who is not the most trustworthy person. However, in the final episode, she did something that genuinely moved Liz and I think motivated her to align herself with Katarina in a very real way.” – John Eisendrath

This being the information that was shared with Red that allowed for her to be tracked down. However, there are also rumblings that another mysterious force could make a reappearance in season 8.

“We heard whispers tonight of The Sikorsky Archive, which will come back, is incredibly important and is part of the deep mythology that goes back to the beginning of the show.” – Jon Bokenkamp

All our questions will be answered in season 8 of The Blacklist, but keep checking back in on this page to find out more information as to when it could premiere.
