Some Sunderland fans are urging the Mackems to move for a player with whom they were linked when Chris Coleman was manager.
The Northern Echo reported in January 2018 that Sunderland were one of the clubs keen to take the striker Chris Martin on loan from Derby County.
But Martin later joined Reading instead.
A season-long spell at Hull City followed, before the Scotland international revived his Derby career with 12 goals from 38 outings last season.
But Martin is now out of contract at Derby, who say they have not been able to agree a new deal with the soon-to-be 32-year-old.
And fans of various clubs are now calling for Martin to join them – with those of a Sunderland persuasion among the noisiest.
This is what they’re saying on Twitter…
Sunderland are down to just two recognised senior strikers in Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg after Kyle Lafferty left at the end of last season.
And Martin, a physical centre forward not dissimilar in style to Lafferty, could prove an ideal replacement if Sunderland can afford to pay Martin the wages that Derby seemingly could not.
