Season 1 of Ultimate Tag may have only just tagged-out on FOX, but fans are already wondering if and when the fast-paced game show will return for season 2.

When Ultimate Tag first premiered, there was something that drew viewers in. I’m not sure whether it was the fast-paced nature of the show or whether it was something we all had envisioned as kids.

Season 1 of Ultimate Tag may have only just concluded on FOX, but viewers are already wondering if and when the game show will return for a second round.

Ultimate Tag season 2: Renewal status

  • At the time of writing, Ultimate Tag has not been renewed for a second season, nor has it been officially cancelled by FOX.

To be honest, we are 50/50 as to whether Ultimate Tag will be returning for a second round or whether this is time-up for the game show.

On one hand, the first season of Ultimate Tag has averaged a 0.55 rating and 1.88 million viewers, which are still respectable scores for any brand-new game show. Plus, the series appears to have a very passionate audience on social media, indicating there is potential for another season.

However, both the ratings and viewership for season 1 have been drastically falling ever since the premiere episode back in May – which garnered a 1.3 rating and 5.33 million viewers. The interest in the show is quite noticeably reducing and unfortunately, these numbers are often the deciding factor in the life or death of a series.

Personally, I could see FOX renewing the show for a second season but moving the airing to a lesser-prime time slot in the scheduling. As always, we will keep you updated on the future of Ultimate Tag as soon as new information is officially announced.

When would S2 premiere?

  • Whilst there is no official release date for season 2 yet, we expect a second instalment to premiere in spring-2021.

This isn’t the type of show that requires months and months of post-production and neither does it require too much set-up in terms of filming. However, the issues with season 2 will be mainly to do with health and safety concerning the global coronavirus pandemic.

The competitors in the series need to be covid-negative and the course itself would need sanitising after each run of the course is done. Although, as we have seen in ongoing sporting events such as the UFC, continuous sanitation between competition is pretty easy to do.

The only other that I could see, with regards to season 2s production, would be the lack of crowd. Ultimate Tag is indeed a spectator sport and that energy from a watching crowd is a major part of this particular game show. So, I could see Ultimate Tag season 2 being postponed until a real crowd can be safely allowed access to the area again.
