Jermaine Jenas has claimed that Nicolas Pepe has been a transfer flop for Arsenal this season and he is right ‘up there’ with Newcastle striker, Joelinton in that regard, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live.
Both players joined their respective clubs last summer for big-money fees, with the Newcastle man only scoring two Premier League goals, whilst Arsenal’s wideman has scored five and assisted six.
From Pepe’s perspective, he might feel he has been hard done by because for a 25-year-old in his debut campaign in England, it hasn’t been spectacular from him, but nor has it been a disaster.
Jenas was asked who he thinks the transfer flops have been from this season, as Pepe’s name was mentioned and he provided this reaction.
“Oh god. yeah,” Jenas told BBC Radio 5 Live. “That’s up there with Joelinton, I think. It’s the money, it’s as simple as that.
“The amount of money that has been spent on him in terms of what he has delivered and what you can actually see.
“Everyone can have a bad season. I don’t remember it but a lot of people talk about Henry’s first season at Arsenal and that it didn’t quite go for him straight away. And they kind of lean on that quite a lot in terms of these types of signings in that he will get it right. [But] I have just not seen it with this particular player. So that business there looks bad business, at the minute.”
From Pepe’s perspective, he still has an FA Cup final to look forward to and he can answer his critics at Wembley.
It remains to be seen whether he will start against Chelsea next week, but if he does then the stage will be set for him to win a trophy in his first season at the club.
If that happens then it will be a great boost heading into the new season, where the Arsenal faithful will be hoping he can take his game to the next level.
