Some Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter are calling on Ajax to re-sign Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgium international is gearing up for an emotional farewell at Spurs after spending eight years in North London.
Tottenham are set to release their long-serving defender and it remains to be seen where he’s off to.
The Dutch giants, who sold Vertonghen to the Premier League club in 2012, certainly prompted speculation this afternoon by messaging their old centre-back.
The 33-year-old posted a picture of one of his children wearing an Ajax jersey, before the Eredivisie club’s social media manager offered to send him an updated shirt.
Vertonghen is a hugely-popular player among Tottenham fans for his service and commitment down the years.
And some supporters would love to see their stalwart return to Amsterdam this summer. Here’s how they responded to Ajax’s tweet today:
The interesting thing is that Jose Mourinho hasn’t got many centre-backs available, so releasing Vertonghen – who earns £100,000 per week – is a bit of a gamble.
Mourinho only has Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez as proven options in that role, although Juan Foyth, Japhet Tanganga and Eric Dier can also play there.
But none of those three are proven to be top quality in that position and therefore it’s a risk by releasing Vertonghen, unless they strengthen.
