According to a report from Goal, Arsenal are set to be without Shkodran Mustafi for the FA Cup final.
The German World Cup winner went off injured in Arsenal’s recent win over Manchester City, and it now looks like that injury will keep him out for the remainder of the season.
That is a big blow for the Gunners. Mustafi barely played under Unai Emery and many felt that his time at the club had come to an end.
However, the former Valencia man proved his doubters wrong with a string of impressive performances since Mikel Arteta’s appointment.
Mustafi featured in 12 of Arsenal’s last 15 league games. The Gunners lost just three times with him in their back line in that period, and many supporters felt that he was the best centre-half at the club at the moment.
Arteta was asked if Mustafi had a chance to make it to Wembley and the Arsenal boss said: “I doubt it. I don’t know. We have to see how he evolves in the next few days. At the moment, I doubt it.” (Goal)
Rob Holding will have to step up
That opens up an opportunity for Rob Holding to play a part. The Englishman has good memories in the final of the FA Cup having played a brilliant game against Chelsea a few years ago.
Now that the competition, venue and the opposition are the same, Holding will be keen to put in a strong display again and, if he does, Arsenal’s chances of taking home a trophy this season get a big boost.
A win against Chelsea in the final will send Arsenal straight into the Europa League next season. That is an absolute necessity for the club if Arteta wants to have the funds he needs to bring in top players this summer.
