Arsenal are interested in signing Mikel Arteta favourite Douglas Luiz after the £15 million midfielder produced a superb performance as Aston Villa’s 1-0 triumph over the Gunners on Tuesday, according to 90Min.
While match-winning Trezeguet and a rejuvinated Jack Grealish were the toast of Villa Park this week, the impact of a £15 million Brazilian ankle-biter should not be underestimated.
It was Luiz who provided the platform for a victory which lifted the Midland giants out of the relegation zone for the first time in five months, with just one Premier League fixture remaining.
The bleach-blonde 22-year-old produced a defensive midfield masterclass which would have had Arsenal fans pining for the heady days of Gilberto Silva, making two tackles, two interceptions and three clearances during a display full of energy and determination.
Those are two attributes Arsenal have frequently been accused of lacking for around a decade.
So it should be no surprise really that, according to 90Min, Gunners boss Arteta would love to be reunited with a player he knows well from their time together at Manchester City.
Villa paid £15 million to sign Luiz just last summer.
It is telling, however, that Manchester City demanded a buy-back clause in his contract, with Pep Guardiola admitting in the Autumn that he remains a big fan of a player he described as a ‘quality’ talent.
Considering that the four-time Premier League champions are mulling over triggering that same clause at the end of the season, Arteta faces an uphill battle as he looks to snap up the Arsenal target from under the noses of his old employers.
