FIFA 21 will be coming out soon enough and there will be a reveal trailer later today. However, prior to hopefully showing some incredible gameplay and graphics, EA Sports have pulled the curtain on the game’s official box art for the Standard, Ultimate, and Champions Editions. All of the covers star Kylian Mbappe on the front, and none of them are near as impressive as the footballer’s skill on the pitch as they’re all quite frankly hideous.

There have been some really good FIFA covers in the past with arguably the best being FIFA 06 which starred Wayne Rooney and Ronaldinho. Last year’s instalment wasn’t too bad either with a simple cover of Eden Hazard with a pink background which was pretty much the same as Cristiano Ronaldo’s in front of blue.

However, rather than the cover athlete being someone who has made a big money move, the star this time around is PSG’s Kylian Mbappe. While no one can deny that he deserves to be FIFA 21’s poster boy, we simply wish that the box art was a lot cleaner and more visually appealing.

Who is the FIFA 21 box art cover star?

Kylian Mbappe is the cover star for the FIFA 21 box art.

The PSG footballer is the cover star for every edition of the FIFA 21 box art including the Standard, Ultimate, and Champions Edition.

This is disappointing as well because NBA 2K21 at least has variety with different cover athletes for every version available to pre-order.

However, while it would’ve been nice for a different footballer to don the front of each edition for FIFA 21, it’s not the end of the world as what matters is the gameplay and content rather than the case the disc comes in. Not to mention most people will likely purchase a digital copy rather than a physical one.

With that being said, there is the opinion that the FIFA 21 box art is simply ugly. The Standard Edition has a bunch of Kylian Mbappe pictures overlapping each other with a central image that would’ve been fine and standard on its own.

The Ultimate Edition is a bit better, but it doesn’t scream football as Kylian Mbappe is pictured just walking in some baggy clothes. And the Champions Edition has the same problem as the Standard.

EA should be commended for trying something different and stylish, but it’s an art experiment that won’t work for many as video game box art. Still, it’s the thought that counts.
