Kanye West has revealed lots on Twitter but what is 5150? Let’s explore its meaning and attempt to understand why Ye is mentioning it.
Few musicians are as divisive as Kanye West.
Back in 2004, the hip-hop hopeful blew listeners away with his debut studio album, The College Dropout. Following up his success with the phenomenal Late Registration, Kanye cemented himself as one of the genre’s most essential voices.
Continuing to dazzle and impress with Graduation, 808s and Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, there seemed to be no stopping him.
In 2013, he released his most experimental and outlandish project to date with Yeezus. The praise it received was immense, but it’s also the moment some fans checked out, as much of his activity surrounding the release and thereafter placed an emphasis on Kanye as celebrity, not musician.
For years now, many have associated him more with his views and comments in the media than his musical output.
His latest Twitter rant is yet another example of why that may be.
Kanye West raises eyebrows on Twitter
He recently let loose and fired out a string of tweets calling out names – including his wife, Drake, Shia LaBeouf etc. – and revealing family concerns.
The majority of these have since been deleted, but according to Sohh, he tweeted such things as “Everybody knows the movie Get Out is about me” and “West children will never do playboy west.”
Inevitably, fans have since been deeply concerned for his safety and wellbeing.
As highlighted by Medium, he also recently tweeted about two doctors who attempted to reach him with Kim to “5150” him.
So, what does this mean exactly?
What is 5150?
- 5150 is a California law which states that someone who poses a threat to themselves or others as a result of their mental health can be detained for 72 hours and evaluated in a psychiatric facility.
This meaning is confirmed by the Dictionary.com definition, which includes that the individual may be treated by peace officers, registered nurses, doctors, or other appropriate health professionals.
It’s noted that the law comes from Article 1, Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code, initially signed back in 1967.
The source adds that police officers have been known to use the term 5150 as slang for an emotionally disturbed subject, while many people have similarly used the term simply to refer to someone who has been detained for odd behaviour.
Kanye has a history of 5150
Vice reported back in 2016 that Kanye was released from hospital after being held on a 5150 psychiatric hold.
They address that he was at UCLA Medical Center for over a week as a result of his behaviour; this included calling out Jay-Z and Beyonce, canceling his world tour etc.
The source also includes that he allegedly tried to attack a member of staff at a gym on the day he was later taken in.
As for the law in general, Vice notes that such celebrities as Britney Spears have a history of being held under 5150.
