Read on to find out more.

What does 988 mean?

988 is the new number for The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which will be put into use in 2022.

The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously on Thursday 16th June to make 988 as the number Americans can call to be directed to the 24/7 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline hotline.

Having a shorter phone number, similar to 911 will make it easier and more accessible for Americans to reach out for help and support.

Ajit Pai, FCC Chairman said:

“Establishing the easy-to-remember 988 as the ‘911’ for suicide prevention and mental health services will make it easier for Americans in crisis to access the help they need.”
