According to Corriere della Sera, Tottenham Hotspur are among the frontrunners in the race to sign Nicolo Zaniolo but the player is keen to stay at Roma.

Zaniolo’s future in the Italian capital has been placed into question.

A recent report from Corriere dello Sport claims Roma are under financial pressure and the club fears they could lose their prized asset for a cheaper fee.

Moreover, Zaniolo’s recent performances have prompted stinging criticism from Paulo Fonseca, with the Roma manager blasting his player’s lack of attitude and responsibility.

Corriere della Sera claim Spurs, Inter and Juventus are leading the chase to sign him.

Mourinho is said to seek a move for the Italy international due to his determination and physical attributes suited to a starring role in the Premier League.

But so far none of the clubs have come up with a suitable offer.

Juventus reportedly saw a player-plus-cash deal turned down. Inter, meanwhile, have a 20% sell-on clause which they want to use to get Zaniolo at a discounted fee.

Roma, however, seek £50 million as they know a sale won’t go down well with the supporters while Zaniolo doesn’t want to leave despite a frosty relationship with Fonseca.

Tottenham must look at strengthening this summer. Spurs struggled during Harry Kane’s absence with injury, while the sale of Christian Eriksen left a creative void.

Zaniolo, 21, is an attack-minded midfielder with six goals this season. Former Spurs player Luke Modric is a big fan, telling Gazzetta dello Sport. “Favorite players? I’ve always liked stylish players; Totti, Del Piero, (Andrea) Pirlo. Now, there are young people who promise a lot, above all Zaniolo. A pure talent.”

Zaniolo’s age, potential, style of play and high re-sale value would certainly fit Tottenham’s philosophy. But judging by recent reports, signing him could be an uphill task.
